2027 Enrollment / Urgent Consultation

Application
ConsultationThe University of Tokyo — College of Design

The Application Guidelines were published on September 14. If anything about your eligibility, transcripts, or evaluator is unclear, you must contact UTokyo by September 25, 5:00 PM JST — otherwise you may not be able to apply at all. Our team has read every page of the guidelines and will sort out your individual situation.

01 / Requirements

Start with
the numbers.

These are the expectations stated in the guidelines. If you meet them, or expect to, contact us now.

Route A
Common Test
Approx. 80% or higher
on designated subjects in January 2027.
Route B
Standardized tests
SAT 1480 / ACT 33 / A-level 3 subjects at A / IB 38 (predicted grades accepted)
English
Both routes
TOEFL iBT above 4 (new scale) / IELTS above 6.0 / Duolingo above 110 / Cambridge above 169. Tests taken on or after January 1, 2025 only. Route B applicants educated in English may be exempt.
02 / Pre-Application Check

Contact us before
September 25.

Applicants in these situations must submit a Pre-Application Check Request to UTokyo. Miss the deadline and you may be unable to apply this year.

  1. 01Your qualification is not a Japanese high school diploma — international school, overseas school, GED, national exams, or you left school early.
  2. 02Your school cannot issue official transcripts for the last three years, or the Japanese-format study report.
  3. 03You are not currently enrolled and have no teacher who can write your evaluation.
  4. 04You plan to use a qualification whose status is unclear — A-level Japanese, or a country-specific exam.
  5. 05You have a disability and need accommodations during screening.
We will draft your inquiry to the Admissions Office with you, ready to send the same day.
03 / How It Works

What the consultation
covers.

Step 1Add us on LINE and send four things: your year and school type, your test scores, your English score, and your biggest concern.
Step 2We check your situation against the guidelines and reply within 24 hours: can you apply, and which route.
Step 3If useful, a free 40–60 minute online meeting to settle your essay topics and timeline.
Step 4You leave with a day-by-day plan counting back from the November 5 deadline.
  • Confirming eligibility and whether you need to contact UTokyo
  • Route A (Common Test) or Route B (SAT, IB, A-level, etc.)
  • Narrowing down topics for the two essays (max 300 and 50 words)
  • Preparing for the video assignment (recorded live, Nov 13–16) and the second screening
  • Arranging the teacher evaluation — your application cannot be submitted without it
04 / What’s New

What the guidelines
revealed.

Essays

Not “why UTokyo” — but “who are you”

Write about something in your local area that you feel passionate about. Your essay should describe it and reflect on why it is meaningful to you.max. 300 words
Tell us about something that made you take action without anyone telling you to.max. 50 words

There is no statement of purpose. What decides this is whether you have a subject that is genuinely yours.

Video / Second Screening

No pre-recorded uploads. You record live.

Details arrive November 6; you record and submit inside the application system between November 13 and 16. Route A’s second screening is a full day at Komaba (interview, teamwork exercises, written assignments). Route B’s is a 30-minute online interview in English.

Evaluation

Without your teacher’s evaluation, you cannot submit.

A teacher enters the evaluation directly online: concrete examples for five qualities, “three words that describe the applicant,” and more. Ask your teacher by early October.

05 / FAQ

Frequently asked
questions.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. The LINE exchange and one online meeting (40–60 minutes) are free. After the meeting we may describe a paid program that supports you through to the deadline; joining is entirely optional.

I’m not in my final year. Can I still ask?

This service is only for applicants to the 2027 intake (current final-year and gap-year students). We will publish separate guidance for younger students.

My scores are below the expectations. Should I still write?

Yes — but we will tell you honestly if the gap is too wide, and help you think about alternatives. We do not push anyone to apply.

Can a parent contact you on the student’s behalf?

On LINE, yes. For the online meeting we ask that the student join, because essay topics have to come from the applicant’s own words.

Can I answer in English?

Yes. Write to us in English or Japanese; our staff work in both.

“Year 13, predicted 3A, IELTS 7.5” is enough. From that alone we can tell you whether a consultation is worth your time, or whether you should focus elsewhere.

Final-year and gap-year applicants only. Admissions other than UTokyo College of Design are not covered by this consultation service.
